Perryville Commemoration: Troops, turtles, & traditions

living history

Every October, Perryville comes together to honor its history with the Perryville Commemoration. This family-friendly weekend is filled with live music, food, shopping, and fun activities for all ages. One of the most exciting moments is the Street Skirmish, where costumed reenactors fill Historic Merchants Row, bringing the past to life right in the heart of town. It’s a unique way to experience history while enjoying the welcoming spirit of our community.

Turtle Derby

The Snappin’ Chaplin Turtle Derby is a crowd favorite at the Perryville Commemoration! Families and friends gather along the banks of the Chaplin River to cheer on their chosen turtle as it makes its way to the finish line. With plenty of laughter, friendly competition, and small-town charm, the derby has become a tradition that brings people together year after year. It’s a lighthearted highlight of the weekend that you won’t want to miss!

Community traditions

The Perryville Commemoration isn’t just about history—it’s also a weekend full of food, music, and shopping! Enjoy delicious bites from local food trucks, browse unique finds from artisan and vintage vendors, and kick back to the sound of live music filling the streets. Whether you’re looking for a tasty treat, a one-of-a-kind treasure, or just a good time with friends and family, the celebration has something for everyone to enjoy.

Pedal tractor pull

Kids love getting in on the action at the Perryville Commemoration with the Pedal Tractor Pull! Now in its 3rd year and held in honor of Dickie Mayes, this event gives young participants the chance to test their strength and have some fun competition on miniature pedal tractors. It’s a joyful tradition that celebrates community spirit, brings big smiles, and keeps Dickie’s love for kids and farming alive in a meaningful way.

Casting at Commemoration

This year’s Perryville Commemoration introduces the 1st annual Casting at Commemoration in honor of Benton Boone Lester! Kids will have the chance to learn how to cast a fishing pole, check out real fishing boats up close, and even take home their very own pole—free to the first 50 kids. It’s a fun and hands-on way to inspire a love for the outdoors while honoring Benton’s memory and passion for fishing.

Miss & mister Perryville pageant

The Miss and Mr. Perryville Pageant is always a highlight of the Commemoration weekend, showcasing the youngest members of our community! Open to ages 0–18, the pageant celebrates confidence, personality, and small-town charm as participants take the stage. From adorable toddlers to shining teens, it’s a fun tradition that brings families together and gives kids a special moment to be celebrated in the heart of Perryville.
